Teamwork, has become, or perhaps it has always been an umbrella term denoting "the combined action of a group, especially when effective and efficient". For me teamwork is a group's unified effort to overcome challenges by pooling together their time, talent and resources. With that in mind, I'd like to share a newsflash I wrote which is my favourite example of teamwork this year.
[ROSA] Go Above and Beyond to Maximize Their Impact in the Face of Technical Challenges
Trying times call for a resilient response and the resourceful multi-cultural staff at [the Regional Office for Southern Africa (ROSA)] exemplified the Organization’s prowess as a focal point for cooperation on Monday 2 July, 2018 by pooling together their wit, expertise and creativity to get the job done despite technical and technological challenges. The Regional Office in Harare experienced a hefty blow to its power supply, which was cut, due to a major electrical fault in the Newlands area. Despite the physical challenges that accompany connectivity issues, water supply and telecommunication infrastructure, the multi-skilled Staff proactively teamed up to create a work-solution of their own.
In the generator-powered collaborative open-plan workspace of the main Conference Hall, [the] 5 key sectors of; Culture, Natural Science, Education, Communication and Information, Social and Human Sciences (SHS), maximized their impact by applying an Intersectoral approach to their work in overcoming the challenges faced. A studious sense of seriousness, overlaid with humor, humility and helpfulness subsequently led to a consensual staff commitment centered on progressing the mandate, entrusted them by their partners, instead of penalizing them. The staff complement, which includes dedicated Interns, Consultants, Programme Specialists, Unit Supervisors, Programme Assistants, and General Staff- made sure not to exclude anyone based on age, race, gender, nationality and the like.
Against the backdrop of possible discouragement, the fortitude of the Field Officers and Staff is evident as they continue to adapt to a difficult work situation (which is exacerbated by the challenges of the unexpected). Fusing their strengths to achieve the ultimate goal of serving Governments, civil society organisations, academics, development partners, and UN Agencies, The Regional Office seeks to harmonise its programmes and activities for greater effectiveness, in Zimbabwe and the Region as a whole.
